چکیده

The spontaneous ignitability of Pinus halepensis pine needles was evaluated. Fire points and times taken for irradiated fuels to be ignited were correlated, at given heat intensity, to the airflow around the specimen and the sample size. The tests showed that increase of the airflow rate above 1.5 lmin 1 increased considerably the fire point values and ignition delay times. On the contrary, the sample size in the range investigated (0.2–1.0 g) showed a negligible effect on the ignition properties. The influence of fire chemical retardants (NH4)2HPO4 (DAP) and (NH4)2SO4 (AS) on the ignitability characteristics was studied under various concentration levels. The data in this study showed that the presence of DAP and AS increases the fire point, as well as the time required for ignition, and this effect is pronounced at high concentration levels. However, at lower temperatures, i.e. below 5001C, flaming combustion appears sensitive to the AS quantity applied, whereas at high temperatures (i.e. above 6001C) the DAP concentration had a major influence on its flammability behavior. In addition the time of combustion was slightly extended, therefore, the energy release rate was reduced in the presence of fire retardants, particularly of AS. The purpose of this study was to quantify the fire extinguishing capabilities of (NH4)2HPO4 and (NH4)2SO4, commonly used chemicals in forest fires, by comparing the ignition properties of samples, prior and after retardant loading. r 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Autoignition and thermogravimetric analysis of forest species treated with fire retardants

Spontaneous ignition tests of various forest species were performed with a specifically designed apparatus. The forest species selected: Arbutus andrachne, Cistus incanus, Pinus brutia, Pinus halepensis, Cupressus sempervirens, Pistacia lentiscus, Abies cephalonica are very common in the Mediterranean region which is frequently devastated by forest fires. The same tests were performed in the pr...

Effects of CO2 enrichment on growth and root 15NH4+ uptake rat

NH4 uptake capacity of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Douglas. Ex Laws.) seedlings that were grown in pots in a phytotron at CO2 partial pressures of 35 or 70 Pa with NH4 + as the sole N source. Kinetics of N-labeled NH4 + uptake were determined in excised roots, whereas total NH4 + uptake and uptake rates were determined in intact root systems following a 48...

COMPARISON OF EPICUTICULAR WAX ON NEEDLES AND STEMS OF Pinus eldarica WITH ITS TWO NATURALLY GENERATED FORMS

Plant cuticles are covered by epicuticular waxes with considerable ultrastructural and chemical diversity and have great systematic significance. Pinus elderica is a rare pine found naturally only in desert environment southeast of Tbilisi (Georgia). This tree have been probably introduced to Iran about 800 years ago and gradually altered in both shape and size in Nashtifan-Khaf, and changed in...

Pollution-Induced Histochemical and Chemical Adaptation in Pinus Needles from the Palermo Area (Italy)

We examined adaptations in histochemical composition and chemical element content in pine needles caused by pollution stress. Phenol content and trace element concentrations were measured in mature needles of Pinus halepensis Mill. and Pinus pinea L. from an urban ecosystem (the city of Palermo, Italy) and compared with samples collected in periurban sites where air pollution is presumably lowe...

Variation in NH4 C mineralization and microbial communities with stand age in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests, Yellowstone National Park (USA)

Soils and vegetation were analyzed in 20 lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forest stands, varying in age from 50 to 350 years, that had initiated following stand-replacing fire. Our goal was to determine how nitrogen availability (NH4 –N) and microbial community composition varied with stand age-class and to determine whether differences could be explained by canopy, soil, or understory character...
